Desk-Based Assessments

DBAs are very often the first step in the formal process of archaeological assessment, as required by local authorities.  They are often required prior to a planning application being considered, to inform the local authority about the sensitivity of the development.  Desk-based assessments involve research into readily available archaeological and historical information relevant to the development area.  Sources that are consulted usually include data held by Historic Scotland, The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, Local Authority Records, The National Archives of Scotland and The National Library of Scotland.
